Ubuntu System Commands



Power Commands
Shutdown computer
Code:
sudo poweroff
Off
Code:
sudo shutdown -h now
reboot computer
Code:
sudo reboot
or
Code:
sudo shutdown -r 0
Network Configuration
Open network configuration file
Code:
sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces
Restart the network:
Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
Change Timezone
The easiest way to do this is to reconfigure the tzdata package

sudo dpkg-reconfigure tzdata
Updates
Get update software list, enter:

sudo apt-get update
Code:
Update software(s) i.e. apply updates:
Code:
sudo apt-get upgrade
Apply kernel upgrade:

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Upgrade individual software packages command:
Code:
sudo apt-get install name-of-package
Ping
Code:
ping -c3 www.google.ie
Speedtest
To simply test your internet Speed, enter:

wget -O/dev/null speedtest.pixelwolf.ch
Clean
To clear the cache you can use either the clean or the auto-clean op for a command-line program called apt-get. The clean command will remove every single cached item, while the auto-clean command only removes cached items that can no longer be downloaded (these items are often unnecessary).

sudo apt-get clean
To remove packages that were automatically installed to satisfy dependencies for other package and that are no longer needed.
Code:
sudo apt-get autoremove
After installing anything with apt-get install, localepurge will remove all translation files and translated man pages in languages you cannot read.

sudo apt-get install localepurge
If you want to configure localepurge you need to edit

Checking open ports on Ubuntu

netstat -anltp | grep "LISTEN"
Enable root account

sudo passwd root
Chmod for a folder and all of its subfolders and files

sudo chmod 755 -R /whatever/your/directory/is
